TW: Holiday work music video ideas

Research into three contemporary tracks without music videos

1)     Mac Miller – Lua

How to visualise the track:
-gloomy connotations due to forlorn tone adopted in song
-urban setting revealed by lyrics
-the use of juxtaposition in the song, such as ‘we might die from medication but we sure killed all the pain’, means the song has contrasting parts to it.
-connotations of a

Features which my group could emulate:
-the storytelling nature of the song means a narrative heavy music video would be preferred
-the use of juxtaposition could be emphasised through colour grading and cinematography

2)     Jack Garratt – Worry

How to visualise the track:
-raining on window
-juxtaposed with fire and colour when chorus kicks in to illustrate message of song
-use of flashbacks (colour grading) to illustrate verses about his lover
-connotations of landscapes and scenery

Features which my group could emulate:
-use of flashbacks (colour grading) to illustrate changes in time within the video

3)     Vince Staples – Summertime

How to visualise the track:
-urban connotations imply conventional high-rise building visuals
-weather is an important concept within the song
-a paradox is constructed which incites unease in the audience, due to Vince’s hope that the summertime of ’06 could be forever, when we know that’s not the case

Features which my group could emulate:
-Vince Staples challenges dominant ideologies about his hometown, Long Beach, in Summertime.
-the importance of weather and therefore pathetic fallacy is a useful tool to create mood
-use of paradox creates empathy for the artist, which is therefore contributing  to meta narrative.

Music videos which have features we could emulate

1)     Mark Ronson, The Business Intl – Bang Bang Bang

- use of narrative outside of the music video. The music video is played following a TV-style interview.
-use of performance of Mark Ronson = close ups of playing keyboard etc contribute to meta-narrative as have connotations of musical talent

2)     Kendrick Lamar – Alright

-use of narrative outside of the music video.
-use of intertextual references is very prominent, such as the policeman shooting at the end
-use of colour grading gives vintage feel and places audience in Lamar’s life growing up

3)     The Underachievers – Gold Soul Theory

-use of different lenses to give distorted feel
-use of colour grading emphasises the artists, makes them stand out
-use of fire at 1:20 with jump cuts and editing to merge a lighter and a bonfire together
-particularly enjoyed the effect that time lapse gave when juxtaposed with slow motion

4)     Capital Steez – Free the Robots

-like the feel of the music video supplemented by library shots

-use of music video to amplify lyrics very prominent
