TW: Technical Analysis of Joey Bada$$ - Like Me (Feat. BJ the Chicago Kid.)

I have chosen this music video as it is a purely narrative music video, like the video we aim to make. Furthermore, the use of editing transitions in the video are a style we wish to emulate, as well as some particular shots which I find particularly interesting; shots we are going to use also.

NB – the colour changes in the tables below illustrate the change in location

NB – the camera shot is constantly a close tracking shot (camera moving slightly) – which places the audience within the narrative.

NB – the whole video is in slow-motion

Summary
-The first minute of the video has a very fast cutting rate in comparison to the slower final minute of the song. This is an interpretation which we intend to implement in our own music video, and this music video provides perfect justification – as it suggests that narrative music videos reach a slower, more calm conclusion.
-The use of POV shots is important in the music video to position the audience within the narrative, this is something we are definitely going to use in our narrative music video.
-The use of transition editing is vital during the video to change location and time, a necessary method to move on the narrative. We are going to use similar transitions in our piece, such as panning up to the sky and panning down to change scene.

6 frames want to use

Transition editing - camera goes up to sky and comes down to change time from evening to morning

Change in camera distance from object as character runs past cars

Transition editing - camera moves past object to change location

Use of POV shots to position audience within narrative
Composition - centralisation of character and placement of hands on the lines of 1/3 and 2/3 is a framing composition we are going to use also - aesthetically pleasing.

  2. Yes Tom, nice stills, I think that they would fit nicely into our ideas. I particularly like the running shot behind the cars. Excellent analysis.
